The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Addicted No. 3 launched in 2022 from Twist, a small indie fragrance house with a botanical sensibility and a clear point of view. The fragrance arrived as a love letter to one of modern perfumery's most talked-about gourmand compositions: YSL's Black Opium, the cult-favorite that turned coffee and vanilla into a generational scent. Twist's take reads as a deliberate counter-offer, a study in the same gourmand blueprint rendered through a vegan, paraben-free formula. Where the original became a beauty-counter icon, Addicted No. 3 delivers the coffee-vanilla-patchouli skeleton through Twist's own lens, and the result is a sweet gourmand that doesn't ask you to choose between quality and accessibility. It just shows up, pours itself, and stays.
The interesting move here is structural. Addicted No. 3 lets the espresso note breathe through the heart phase instead of holding it hostage in the opening, which gives the fragrance a slower, more satisfying arc. The pink pepper in the top adds a controlled sparkle that keeps the sweetness from collapsing into one-note territory. The orange blossom and jasmine do quiet work, lifting the white-floral accord so the coffee doesn't feel like a standalone beverage.
The evolution
The opening is a bright collision. Pink pepper, mandarin, and pear sorbet land like citrus candy tossed into a coffee shop, sweet and fizzy and immediate. Then the coffee arrives, hot and roasted, carrying orange blossom and jasmine like steam off the surface of an espresso. Not a trace of it is shy. The vanilla enters as the hours pass, thick and slightly smoky, patching things up with patchouli's earthiness. Cedar steps in last, barely a whisper, adding a dry wood frame that keeps the sweetness from puddling. As the drydown settles, what remains is a close-skin blend of vanilla, warm wood, and that ghost of cold coffee. It doesn't vanish. It just sits closer, like a memory that knows your name. The transition from bright opening to soft base is gradual and almost cinematic, each phase ceding space to the next without any hard breaks.
Cultural impact
Addicted No. 3 exists in conversation with one of the most recognizable gourmands of the past decade. YSL's Black Opium turned the coffee-vanilla combination into a cultural shorthand for the genre, and Twist's 2022 release sits squarely in that lineage, offering a composition that reads as a clear homage. The appeal is straightforward: a vegan, paraben-free formula that delivers the same family of gourmand notes at a different price point, made by a small indie house rather than a luxury conglomerate.
