The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Do Zafrica No. 110 takes its cue from a well-known point of reference in modern perfumery, Bal d'Afrique by Byredo, and translates that sunlit, citrus-driven idea through Twist's own botanical lens. Released in 2025, it joins a growing catalog of alternative interpretations from the indie house, a small operation known for working with plant-forward materials and numbered releases that sit at a fraction of the cost of the houses that inspire them. The composition leans into marigold and violet as its guiding materials, letting botanical character lead instead of traditional perfumery's heavier naturals and synthetics.
What makes this one worth a second look is the restraint. Most citrus-floral compositions drown themselves in neroli and bergamot until the whole thing smells like a candle aisle. Here, African marigold does the heavy lifting in the opening, giving the top a slightly herbal, golden edge rather than the predictable sharp-sweet sparkle of a typical bright citrus opening. Bergamot plays a supporting role, present enough to lend that familiar lift but never dominant, and it fades quickly rather than lingering through the heart.
The evolution
The opening is all brightness. African marigold leads with something close to saffron's warmth but greener, less precious, more like dried petals than spice. Bergamot rides alongside, sharp and brief, the kind of citrus that lifts off skin quickly rather than hanging around. The effect is golden, slightly vegetal, almost like stepping into a greenhouse just after watering, with that humid, plant-soaked quality settling close rather than projecting outward. As the first phase settles, the marigold recedes and violet steps forward, powdery and cool, with cyclamen adding a faint watery sweetness underneath. The heart phase is surprisingly quiet, more of a whisper than a statement, which lets the transition feel natural rather than constructed.
Cultural impact
Do Zafrica No. 110 contributes to a broader conversation about botanical, vegan perfumery and how alternative houses approach recognizable luxury structures. Twist's numbered series reflects a wider shift in the category, where indie houses are working with plant-forward materials and offering compositions at price points far below the luxury originals that inspired them. The brand's approach, taking a well-known point of reference and translating it through cleaner, cruelty-free, vegan production, has earned it a steady audience among fragrance enthusiasts looking beyond the traditional houses.
