Why it exists.
The beginning
No/9 Mystique arrived in 2022 as the ninth expression in Türkan's numbered collection. Perfumer Angéline Leporini composed it as a study in classical oriental architecture, leaning fully into the warm, resinous territory that defines the more grounded end of the line. The opening is bright and spiced, built on cardamom and saffron that read almost luminous before the deeper notes settle in. At the center, cypriol and rose trade shadow and softness, the cypriol bringing a smoky, rooty depth while the rose adds just enough lift to keep things from turning heavy.
What makes Mystique work is its restraint with big materials. Cypriol, sometimes called nagarmotha, brings an earthy, smoky depth that sits between vetiver and incense. Pairing it with rose keeps the composition from tipping into pure smoke. The leather note here is treated, not raw: it reads like polished saddle rather than workshop hide. Labdanum underneath binds everything with a resinous amber warmth that doesn't shout.
The evolution
The opening is all spice, and it announces itself without apology. Cardamom hits bright and almost sharp, with cinnamon threading underneath and saffron lending a leathery edge that gives the top notes their confident, almost loud character. Then the shift begins. The brighter spices recede and cypriol surfaces, bringing that earthy, rooty smoke that grounds the whole composition and pulls it closer to skin. Rose appears quietly at the heart, adding a soft floral counterpoint that keeps the spices from becoming monotone, a touch of sweetness without ever tipping into sweetness. As the fragrance settles, leather and labdanum take over, building a warm, resinous close that reads more like second skin than projection.
