The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Chic by Styles For Less arrived in 2013, a youthful, confection-driven composition from Tru Western. The brand has been building scent since 1969, tracing its identity through wide landscapes and weathered materials, and Chic offers something distinctly different from that earlier work. It pivots toward something lighter, a floral fruity gourmand designed for everyday joy rather than open horizons. The result is a fragrance that trades the dust of trails for the softness of a candy-shop afternoon, pulling strawberry, kumquat, and red currant into a composition that wears like its name suggests. It reads as effortlessly pulled-together, unmistakably feminine, and built to charm without effort.
What makes the composition work is the tension between its top and base. The opening leans fully into tart, juicy fruit, big strawberry and kumquat carrying the first impression with a sharpness that keeps it from tipping into childish territory. The base then pulls the whole thing into warmth, marshmallow adding a spun-sugar softness that bridges the fruity opening to a white musk and woody foundation. Brightness sits on top, comfort below, with violet and jasmine threading through the middle to keep the sweetness from going flat.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to fruit. Strawberry hits first, glossy and almost candied, with kumquat's citrus bitterness threading through to keep the sweetness honest. Red currant adds a tart edge that makes the opening feel like a fruit bowl rather than a dessert plate. The fruit fades gradually, not suddenly, and around the thirty-minute mark the florals take over. Jasmine and violet arrive soft, almost powdery, joined by water lily's clean coolness. This is the most wearable phase, the part where the fragrance stops being about individual notes and becomes a kind of glowing skin scent. The marshmallow settles in around the two-hour mark, turning the composition warm and creamy without losing the freshness underneath. White musk carries the final hours, soft and close, with woody notes providing a faint, dry backbone.
Cultural impact
Chic by Styles For Less sits in an interesting space within Tru Western's catalog because it does something the brand's other compositions rarely attempt. Where much of the house leans into weight, leather, and landscape, Chic goes the other direction entirely, toward confection, fruit, and softness. It's a floral fruity gourmand that wears its sweetness openly, pulling strawberry, kumquat, marshmallow, and white musk into a single composition that feels more dessert plate than dusty trail. That contrast is part of what makes it work.
