The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Leather Vintage Label Small Batch No. 2 arrived in 2025 from Tru Western, a house treating leather as a material worth its own kind of patience rather than a quick costume cue. The second release in the Vintage Label series was built around a specific mood: the warmth of bourbon caught in a glass, translated into something you wear. Grey suede, shaved white woods, and fresh sage do the talking, each note leaning into the next without crowding it. The opening carries a cool herbal lift from the sage, bright and a little green, the way a fresh sprig breaks apart between your fingers. The white woods settle in underneath, dry and clean, giving the composition a kind of bone structure before the suede arrives.
What makes this composition worth your time is the restraint on display. Sage does the aromatic heavy lifting at the top, green and herbal with a clean bite that reads awake rather than bracing. The white woods move through the middle, dry and shaved, carrying a quiet warmth that does not announce itself. Then suede settles into the base, not as a sharp leather punch but as something softer and more yielding on the skin.
The evolution
On skin, the first fifteen minutes are the sage's. It reads clean and herbal, a little sharp, almost like cracking open a fresh bundle. Not bracing, but awake. Then something quieter takes hold. The white woods arrive underneath, not loud, just warm, like sun through a closed window. Around the thirty-minute mark the suede enters, and the whole thing softens. The sage doesn't disappear. It lingers in the background, dusty and green, while the suede takes the front of the stage. By hour two, the composition has settled into a quiet warmth: suede, woods, and the faintest herbal hum. It stays close to skin rather than throwing itself around the room. The drydown keeps that same hushed character, the sage fading to a memory while the suede and woods hold steady, close to the pulse points and easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.
Cultural impact
Within Tru Western's catalog, the Vintage Label series reads as some of the house's most considered work. The line is built around a smaller set of notes, and No. 2, with its suede-and-sage pairing, leans into that economy with confidence. The pairing of soft suede, shaved white woods, and fresh sage makes for a fragrance that handles the leather brief without leaning on the usual Western shorthand. It is the kind of release that rewards repeat wear, with the suede and sage conversation revealing new angles the longer you sit with it, and it sits comfortably alongside other American-made releases that treat local materials with a real hand.
