Why it exists.
The beginning
Valley Of Imperial arrived in 2023 from the workbench of Mahsam Raza, the nose behind much of The Dua Brand's catalog. The fragrance sits within the brand's Designer Line, a series that interprets the architecture of well-known compositions for a broader audience. The composition itself moves through a clear progression: a davana-topped opening that arrives with herbaceous lift, a Cape snow bush threading green and slightly camphorated notes through the heart, and a leather-musk drydown that grounds the whole structure. Davana leads with a warm, slightly fermented quality that gives the top notes an unusual depth, while the Cape snow bush provides an aromatic thread that carries from the heart well into the later stages.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the layering. Davana is an unusual choice as a lead note, and its presence shapes everything that follows. The herb carries a boozy, almost fermented edge that complicates the bergamot's brightness even before pink pepper enters the picture. Then Cape snow bush adds a green, almost camphorated lift against the oud, creating a herbaceous tension that runs through the heart. The result avoids sweetness in its construction. The evolution
The first twenty minutes belong to the top. As the hours pass, the leather and Haitian vetiver settle into something close and warm, almost suede-like, with musk underneath holding everything to skin. The oud doesn't disappear. It thins, becomes a shadow that hovers over the vetiver for hours. By evening the fragrance has gone quiet, but it doesn't vanish.
