The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
There's a move in chess called the gambit. You sacrifice something early to set up something better later. The Dessert Gambit, composed by Mahsam Raza and released in 2026, plays that same opening. Italian lemon goes first, bright and almost synthetic, a deliberate feint that clears the board. What's left behind is the real game: salted caramel, dark plum, coffee, blackcurrant liqueur, oud, sandalwood, tonka bean. The lemon reads as a burst of citrus peel warmed by something thicker underneath, a sharp entry that gives the composition its first decisive shape. Once the citrus burns off, the caramel slides forward with a salted edge that keeps it from going cloying.
What's interesting is the way the citrus isn't there to freshen things up. It's the setup move. The lemon zigs so the caramel can zag. That kind of bright-then-boozy, sharp-then-sticky sequence is what defines the composition's rhythm from the first spray onward. The blackcurrant liqueur adds a fermented, almost wine-soaked edge to the caramel, deepening the sweetness with a boozy undertone that reads as more sophisticated than straightforward sugar. The plum softens the sharpness with its jammy, fruit-forward character, sitting right between the citrus opening and the warmer base.
The evolution
Right out of the bottle, the Italian lemon is loud, the kind of citrus that announces itself before anything else has a chance to settle. It carries an almost synthetic brightness, sharp and zingy, like zest squeezed over something dark and warm. Then it bends. The caramel slides in underneath, and the lemon doesn't disappear so much as get folded into something thicker, stickier, and more inviting. As the composition continues to develop, the plum and blackcurrant liqueur take over the middle register, offering a wine-dark fruit character with a fermented, liqueur-soaked edge. The coffee is already brewing somewhere in the background at this stage, contributing a roasted bitterness that threads through the sweetness.
Cultural impact
The Dessert Gambit sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line that reads as part of the brand's broader catalog of gourmand and amber-leaning compositions. The fragrance itself combines salted caramel, dark plum, coffee, blackcurrant liqueur, oud, sandalwood, and tonka bean, stacking sweetness against resin and smoke in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. It treats its gourmand base with a certain seriousness, layering fruit, liqueur, and roasted coffee notes over a woody foundation rather than letting the caramel carry the whole show.
