The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Roses And Butterflies arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The official title nods directly to its inspiration: Kilian's Musk Butterfly. The Dua Brand's interpretation leans heavily on the rose, stacking Turkish and Damask varieties alongside ambrette to recreate that lifted, slightly animalic softness. The result is a study in how much rose a composition can hold before the whole thing tips into something unexpected, a floral aldehyde that wears like a second skin. The rose pairing feels deliberate, with each variety pulling the composition in a different direction, while the ambrette grounds the brightness and lends a soft, natural muskiness to the trail.
What makes this composition distinctive is the layering of two rose types. Turkish rose brings a deep, jammy sweetness, while Damask rose contributes a sharper, greener character. Between them sits aldehydes, which add a fizzy, sparkling lift that prevents the roses from collapsing into syrup. The ambrette seed functions as a natural musk, giving the drydown a warm, slightly nutty, almost skin-like quality. Violet and geranium add a cool, slightly metallic edge to the heart, keeping the sweetness in check.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all aldehyde fizz and violet, almost like biting into a fresh stem. Then the roses arrive, slowly and with weight. Turkish rose builds first, deep and almost wine-like, followed by Damask's sharper green facets. The heart phase settles into a soft, powdery space where geranium adds a peppery coolness and the aldehydes smooth everything into a velvet blur. After about 2 hours, the base begins to surface. Ambrette takes over, warm and slightly musky, carrying the sandalwood underneath. The drydown is the best part: a skin-close, intimate rose-amber warmth that clings to fabric. On skin it runs with moderate sillage, staying close rather than projecting. It becomes a whisper, a powdered rose memory that lives on the scarf or collar.
Cultural impact
Roses And Butterflies draws on a well-established tradition of rose-centered compositions that pair the flower with aldehydes to create a lifted, powdery effect. The rose aldehyde format has deep roots in perfumery, with the combination prized for its ability to create structure and brightness in floral compositions. For wearers who gravitate toward compositions that place rose at the center but want something with added brightness and lift, it offers a compelling option.
