The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Region of Fairy Chimneys takes its name from a landscape of surreal rock formations, the fairy chimneys that rise like something the earth decided to sculpt overnight. Released in 2025 by The Dua Brand, this composition draws from that same sense of geological wonder, translating mineral heat and ancient quiet into something you wear on skin. The name conjures images of spires and hooded stone, weather-worn and tilted, catching the light in ways that feel almost deliberate. This one reads as an amber floral meditation on a place that feels older than memory. Saffron opens like sun-warmed rock, dry and faintly coppery, the kind of heat you feel radiating off stone at the end of a long day.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the material hierarchy. Saffron gets the opening alone, a bold choice that lets the most expensive note in the pyramid do its work without competing for attention. Then the heart layers three absolutes: jasmine for lushness, orris root for that powdery, root-beer-adjacent iris character, and rose absolute for depth. The base stacks five materials, and that's where the structure gets interesting. Indian sandalwood provides the creamy spine. Frankincense and myrrh add the sacred, smoky architecture. Benzoin brings the resinous sweetness. And vanilla absolute rounds it all out with warmth that doesn't go gourmand. Five base notes is a lot.
The evolution
The first moments are saffron, almost entirely. It lands warm, slightly leathery, with a mineral edge that comes across almost metallic, the way good saffron does when it isn't buried under competing citrus or competing anything. There's a dryness to it, a sense of heat without sweetness, and it sets the temperature for everything that follows. The jasmine starts to surface as the saffron begins to relax, and the two notes find a strange harmony, the saffron's mineral warmth meeting the jasmine's indolic sweetness somewhere in the middle. The transition isn't abrupt; it's more like watching light change across a stone wall, gradual enough that you don't notice until it's already happened. Orris root settles in next, and it brings that cool, powdery iris quality that makes the whole composition feel dressed up without feeling formal.
Cultural impact
Region of Fairy Chimneys arrives in a fragrance landscape where amber florals with saffron openings have become a recognizable category unto themselves. The composition draws on a palette that many enthusiasts associate with warmth, depth, and a certain contemplative weight, notes that suggest incense, old wood, and sun-baked terrain. The Dua Brand has built recognition around this kind of material, and this release slots into that body of work with a clear sense of intention. Its note list reads like a love letter to resinous perfumery, with frankincense and myrrh anchoring the drydown and benzoin bridging into vanilla's softer territory.
