The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Melt In Love arrived in 2022 from The Dua Brand, and it wears its ambitions openly. The composition leans into dark chocolate as its anchor, a notoriously tricky material to balance because it can tip into cloying candy without the right scaffolding around it. The Dua Brand answered that challenge with a surprisingly grown-up architecture: oud for gravity, absinthe for bite, orris root for that cool powdery lift that keeps everything from collapsing into dessert. There's a deliberate seriousness underneath the sweetness, a sense that this isn't trying to mimic a bakery case or a chocolate shop window. Instead, it builds a more atmospheric version of cocoa, one that's been filtered through smoke, resin, and something faintly herbal.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between the gourmand heart and the aromatic backbone. Nutmeg and Ginger bring clean warmth rather than baking-spice sweetness, while Clary Sage and Ylang-Ylang add a herbal-floral tension that keeps the chocolate from reading juvenile. Absinthe is the wild card, adding that cool aniseed edge that makes the whole thing feel less like a confection and more like a late-night decision. The oud grounds it all, giving the drydown a resinous shadow that keeps the sweetness honest.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with a bright crack of Bergamot and Mandarin Orange, sharpened further by the cool green bite of Absinthe and a flash of Ginger. That citrus-spice top burns quick before the composition tilts into its center of gravity. The chocolate arrives gradually, not as a shout but as a slow dissolve. Nutmeg and Orris root build around it, the orris adding that cool, almost chalky iris note that keeps the cocoa from going sticky-sweet. Clary Sage and Ylang-Ylang give the heart a green-floral lift that makes the whole thing smell more like a sophisticated bar than a candy aisle. As the composition settles, the oud finds its place underneath, giving the fragrance a darker, resinous floor. The chocolate softens, the spices warm, and the drydown becomes this plush, faintly animal blend that sits close to skin.
Cultural impact
Within The Dua Brand's catalog, Melt In Love sits in the gourmand-oriental territory the house revisits often. The absinthe and oud give it a distinctive architecture that separates it from straightforward chocolate compositions. It's a blend that leans into complexity rather than simplicity, and the combination of dark chocolate with resinous oud and aniseed-driven absinthe creates something that reads as a deliberate artistic choice.
