The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Majestic Santal is The Dua Brand's take on Serge Lutens' Santal Majuscule. The original Lutens fragrance built its identity around an unconventional treatment of sandalwood, and Santal Majuscule is exactly the kind of reference that suits The Dua Brand's catalog approach. The Dua Brand's version keeps the architecture of the original intact: bergamot and blackcurrant provide the lift at the top, lily of the valley and jasmine sambac bring a white-floral register to the heart, with vanilla and tonka doing the slow work underneath. Cedar and sandalwood reinforce the woody structure from the base, giving the whole composition a stable frame for the softer materials above.
What makes the Santal Majuscule blueprint interesting is the tension at its core. This one splits the difference between a creamy and a smoky treatment of sandalwood. The green top accords, the cool snap of lily of the valley, and the slight bitterness from the blackcurrant all prevent the sandalwood from sliding into pure dessert territory. The result is a sandalwood composition that smells lit from above rather than glowing from within. Vanilla and tonka are present, but they behave as rounding agents, not headliners.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the greenest the fragrance ever gets. Bergamot and blackcurrant do a quick, almost briny opening, more hedgerow than cologne, with a coolness that catches you off guard. By the 30-minute mark, lily of the valley and jasmine sambac arrive, but softly. They do not project as a white-floral cloud. They read as cool, slightly soapy, woven into the green. From hour one onward, the sandalwood takes over. It is creamy but not heavy, smooth but not flat, the kind of wood note that feels carefully shaped and refined. Vanilla and tonka emerge around the two-hour mark as a low, warm hum. The cedar stays structural underneath, giving the whole composition a slightly dry backbone that prevents the sweetness from tipping.
Cultural impact
Majestic Santal sits in an interesting corner of the fragrance market. It is a reconstruction of a Serge Lutens original, which means it exists in conversation with a house known for dense, layered sandalwood compositions. For wearers who know the reference, it offers an accessible entry point into the Santal Majuscule blueprint. For those who do not, it functions as a standalone sandalwood fragrance with more green bite than many sandalwood-centered fragrances offer.
