The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Forbidden 4 was launched in 2018 by The Dua Brand. This one is their take on Parfum Royale No. 4 by Roja Parfums, a composition long discussed in collector circles for its particular weight and presence. The Dua Brand set out to capture that same density of white florals and balsams, the indolic richness that made the original a quiet collector's piece. The fragrance features jasmine, ylang-ylang, tuberose, oud, clove, heliotrope, labdanum, cinnamon, musk, fir balsam, saffron, vanilla, birch, benzoin, May rose, mandarin orange, cashmere wood, sandalwood, oakmoss, violet, and grass, arranged into a composition that treats its floral heart as the structural core. The note pyramid reads like an inventory of perfumery's most opulent materials, layered with an almost architectural intention.
What makes this composition unusual is the sheer floral density stacked against a resinous, almost incense-like base. Here, cinnamon and clove share the heart with jasmine, May rose, and tuberose, creating a spicy-floral collision rather than a clean separation. The indolic character, the slightly animalic, almost overripe quality of the jasmine and tuberose, is what gives it its depth. Then the base layers in oud, labdanum, benzoin, and fir balsam for a balsamic, almost church-like warmth underneath. It's a composition that treats florals as a structural element rather than decoration.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are dominated by a lush, almost humid wave of Grasse jasmine, tuberose, and May rose. The florals hit with an indolic intensity that reads as warm, slightly animalic, and dense, more like walking into a perfumery than passing a flower garden. Within the first hour, cinnamon and clove surface, warming the floral sweetness into something spiced and slightly resinous. Heliotrope and ylang-ylang add a powdery, almost almond-like undertone that softens the edges. By the two-hour mark, the composition shifts decisively into its base. Oud, labdanum, and benzoin take over, joined by fir balsam and birch, creating a balsamic, smoky warmth. The vanilla and sandalwood underneath keep the drydown plush rather than austere. Performance is widely noted as a strength of this composition.
Cultural impact
Forbidden 4 occupies an interesting space as a reconstruction of one of the more discussed Roja Dove releases, a Parfum Royale line fragrance long referenced in collector communities for its particular floral-balsamic density. That rarity made the original a quiet collector's piece, known mostly by reputation rather than widespread wear. This version, launched in 2018, made the composition accessible to a broader audience who wanted to experience that specific weight of white florals and balsams without the difficulty of sourcing the original.
