The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Captivating Nature arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The composition is deliberately lean. Rhubarb, vetiver, sandalwood, tonka bean, and cedar. No floral cushion, no spice stack, no gourmand scaffolding. Just five materials, each pulling weight. The house's whole approach shows in a scent like this. Captivating Nature reads like a study in restraint: small formula, clear intent, and the kind of balance that comes from knowing what to leave out. The rhubarb gives the scent its identity right at the top, a tart green crack that sets the tone before anything else has a chance to settle. Vetiver and cedar form the structural spine, with sandalwood softening the architecture just enough to keep it from feeling austere.
What makes this composition interesting is the rhubarb-vetiver-sandalwood triangle. Pairing rhubarb with vetiver rather than a sweeter green note keeps the opening from going jammy. The sandalwood gives the rhubarb's sharpness something to dissolve into. Tonka adds warmth without tipping into pastry territory, and cedar closes the structure with a dry, vertical edge that keeps everything upright. It's a short ingredient list doing long-form work. The way the rhubarb hands off to the sandalwood is the key transition.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to rhubarb. Tart, almost vegetal, the way a cut stalk smells before you cook it. There's a greenness here that isn't leafy, more like the stem of something still in the ground. It doesn't scream. It announces. Then the shift. The rhubarb doesn't fade so much as absorb into the sandalwood, and the composition takes on a creamy warmth that wasn't there at the start. Tonka bean thickens the base, lending a low sweetness that reads more skin-like than sugary. Vetiver arrives in the background, earthy and a little smoked, the grounding element you notice more in the air around you than directly on skin. The cedar has been there all along, holding the vertical line, but in the heart it becomes more present, more architectural. As the hours pass, the fruit steps further back.
Cultural impact
Captivating Nature sits in an interesting pocket. The rhubarb opening is the conversation piece, the part that makes someone ask what it is. Everything after that just has to deliver, and it does. The green-fruited entry gives the scent a memorable signature that sets it apart from more conventional woody compositions, and once the wearer moves past the opening, the woody base provides enough familiarity to keep things grounded. The composition succeeds because each stage of the wear gives the person experiencing it something distinct to notice. The opening grabs attention with its tart green character.
