The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Butterfly Effect landed in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The name points directly to the composition's central move: aromatic spices that read almost medicinal at first contact, then transform into something softer and more textured as lavender and fir take over. The fragrance opens with cardamom and coriander, supported by a bright citrus lift that keeps the spices feeling clean rather than heavy. As the top notes settle, lavender arrives in a restrained role, more about texture than sweetness, while artemisia contributes a slightly bitter green quality. Fir balsam, moss, and styrax ground the drydown with deep resinous weight. The composition draws on aromatic traditions, with the brand's own materials shaping the final profile.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between its top and base. Cardamom and coriander belong to the bright, sharp register of perfumery, the kind of spices you smell in a bustling market. Balsam fir, moss, and styrax live in the opposite world entirely, deep, resinous, almost ecclesiastical. The spices never fully surrender their energy, and the woods never quite ground the composition into stillness. The result is a fragrance that feels like two weather systems passing through each other, each leaving something behind on the other.
The evolution
The opening is all coriander, loud, slightly soapy, almost herbal in the way a tincture is herbal. Cardamom hums underneath, warmer, rounder, keeping the sharpness from going acrid. As the composition breathes, the citrus element registers, not as a separate note but as a lift, a brightness that makes the spices feel clean rather than heavy. The transition into the heart phase is gradual, the way good compositions always are. Lavender arrives not as a field but as a whisper, something tucked behind the spices. Artemisia brings a green, slightly bitter quality, the herbaceous note that keeps this from tipping into pure comfort. Jasmine appears here too, but in a restrained role, more about texture than sweetness, lending a creamy undertone to the aromatic blend. Over time, the fir balsam gathers force below the surface and eventually asserts itself.
Cultural impact
Butterfly Effect by The Dua Brand leads with cardamom, layered alongside coriander and bright citrus, drawing on aromatic traditions that have deep roots in Middle Eastern and South Asian fragrance culture. The choice to anchor a composition around spice-forward materials rather than more familiar sweet or fresh templates gives the fragrance a distinctive character. Artemisia and jasmine add herbal and floral complexity to the heart, while fir balsam, moss, and styrax bring resinous depth to the base.
