The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Ink Sport joined The Dua Brand's catalog in 2025. The inspiration traces directly to Encre Noire Sport by Lalique, a fragrance that brought a woody, aromatic character to the fore with a clean structure. The Dua Brand doesn't hide that lineage. The connection is part of the appeal, an open acknowledgment of where the composition comes from rather than a vague gesture toward something familiar. The name itself nods to it: Black Ink, rendered in a sport register, the same skeleton wearing a different set of clothes. What's delivered is a careful reconstruction built to preserve the original's identity while making it reachable. The scent speaks for itself, and it speaks clearly about its roots.
What makes this composition work is the tension between its citrus-spiked opening and its earthy, almost mineral base. Grapefruit and bergamot provide the bright, sharp first contact, a burst that hits the nose with a clean tartness before softening. Cypress and lavender in the middle keep things cool and herbal, leaning aromatic rather than sweet, the kind of accord that reads as brisk and considered. Then vetiver, cashmere wood, and nutmeg settle the whole thing down, the drydown pulling the composition into a quieter register. The result smells like a clean shirt unbuttoned at the collar.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all grapefruit and bergamot, bright and almost sharp enough to wake you up, the citrus duo cutting through with a brisk clarity. Then the lavender arrives, softer than expected, cushioned by cypress's green-woody snap, and the fragrance tips from sparkle into something cooler and more contemplative. That's the window where it smells like the gym's better days, that freshly-showered sharpness without any chemical sting. By the two-hour mark, vetiver takes the lead, smoky and earthy, pulling the warmth of nutmeg up through the base, the spice no longer an accent but a slow undercurrent. The cashmere wood does what cashmere wood does: rounds everything off, adds a tactile softness that makes the scent feel less like a top-note showcase and more like a complete skin scent.
Cultural impact
Black Ink Sport draws from the woody-aromatic tradition, a lineage that prizes clean structure, herbal freshness, and a base that holds its shape without leaning on sweetness or heavy musk. The composition moves through a clear arc: citrus brightness at the top, cool herbal complexity in the heart, and a smoky, mineral warmth underneath. That progression rewards attention, offering something different at each stage without ever losing its identity. The fragrance reads as considered rather than loud, a quiet statement that values balance over projection.
