The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Astronomical arrived in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a deliberate reconstruction of Boadicea the Victorious's Celestial. The house has carved out a clear approach with this kind of release: studying the architecture of high-end niche compositions and rebuilding them in a way that brings the experience to a broader audience. The result is a fragrance that works in the register of its source while reading as something freshly assembled rather than copied. The composition centers on Turkish rose, Haitian vetiver, and frankincense, and these are threaded with lychee, vanilla, and the woody softness of cashmeran.
What makes this composition worth dissecting is the tension between the fruit and the resin. Lychee and rhubarb bring a tart, almost metallic brightness that most woody-florals avoid, because those compositions tend to want warmth and depth, not sharp fruit. Pairing them with frankincense and Haitian vetiver is a bet that the incense and rooty grassiness can anchor the sweetness without killing it. Cashmeran does the quiet work, a synthetic woody-amber molecule that wraps the whole structure in something resembling warm suede. It's the kind of layering that reads expensive in the air.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bergamot and rhubarb, a cold, slightly bitter fruit snap that feels almost green. Then the lychee arrives, sweeter and more generous, while nutmeg starts to generate heat underneath. Turkish rose shows up early in the wear, not as a soliflour but as a thread woven through jasmine, peony, and the soft resin of frankincense. The cashmeran begins to surface here, giving everything a hazy, suede-like quality. After extended wear, the fruit is gone entirely. What remains is warm, dry, and complex: vetiver, cedar, and a vanilla-amber softness that clings to skin like a second layer. On fabric the next day, the frankincense and cashmeran are the last ones standing, quiet but unmistakable. The nutmeg lingers longer than you'd expect, generating a low-grade warmth that bridges the fruity opening and the resinous heart.
Cultural impact
Astronomical sits in a specific lane within the broader fragrance conversation. It carries the character of Celestial while presenting that experience through a different house's materials and pricing structure. For wearers who want incense-and-rose complexity with fruit-sharp edges, the composition delivers a layered, dense wear that holds up to close inspection. The interplay between the tart rhubarb and lychee at the top and the resinous, woody base gives the scent a complexity that rewards repeat wearing.
