The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
A Spice Affair landed in 2020 as part of The Dua Brand's line, stepping away from European leather territory and straight into a masala chai fantasy. Star anise, clove, cardamom, and a kulfi accord built to mimic the dense, slightly floral sweetness of the Indian dessert define the composition. The brand positioned it as an oriental-spicy composition with a clear Indian register rather than something generic. Star anise brings that cold licorice bite right at the front, almost mentholated in its sharpness, while clove wraps around it with a peppery warmth that feels closer to whole spice than to anything candied. Cardamom adds a green, slightly cooling layer, giving the opening a brightness that keeps it from reading heavy or overly sweet.
What separates this from other spicy orientals is the kulfi and masala chai accord working in tandem. The Indian oud adds an animalic shadow beneath the sweetness, something that grounds the whole composition in a way synthetic gourmands rarely achieve. Carnation brings the clove-powder connection, bridging the sharp spice of the opening with the softer, creamier elements that follow, while violet softens the edges and adds a powdery texture that keeps the spices from becoming abrasive.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are sharp. Star anise and clove arrive almost medicinal, that licorice-cold sensation that hits the back of the throat. Cardamom follows, green and slightly mentholated, before the Indian spice accord rounds things out. The heart is where it shifts. Kulfi thickens the composition, creamy and dense, layered with violet that adds a powdered, almost iris-like softness. Clove deepens from sharp to warm, and the masala chai accord surfaces fully, releasing a ginger-laced heat that feels brewed rather than sprayed. This is the chai latte territory, though darker and less sugared than any coffee shop version. The drydown is where the Indian oud earns its place. It emerges from beneath the vanilla slowly, adding a low, resinous hum that keeps the sweetness honest.
Cultural impact
A Spice Affair draws directly from Indian culinary traditions, building its composition around masala chai and kulfi accords rather than borrowing from European or Middle Eastern fragrance conventions. The masala chai accord gives it a recognizable Indian register that wearers either connect with immediately or don't, rooted in the spices that define the actual beverage. The kulfi accord, designed to echo the dense, slightly floral sweetness of the Indian frozen dessert, adds another layer of cultural specificity, making the fragrance feel tied to a particular place and tradition.
