The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
22 Shades of Poseidon arrived in 2020 from The Dua Brand, stepping out of the house's Inspired Hybrid collection, a line that draws from two reference points rather than cloning one. This particular release is a Chypre Fruity built around the contrast between bright, tropical-fruited freshness and a deeper, more grounded base structure. The pineapple and bergamot at the top bring a sharp, almost edible sweetness, while the lower register of oakmoss, patchouli, birch smoke, and ambergris pulls the composition into darker, mineral territory. It's a composition that owns the space between sunlit fruit and shadowed undergrowth, refusing to settle into either one.
What makes the hybrid worth unpacking is the tension it sets up in the opening minutes and then refuses to resolve. The top delivers a bright, almost cocktail-like burst of pineapple and bergamot, calibrated for instant impact, and that's where the composition plants its flag at first spray. But the base pulls in the opposite direction: oakmoss, patchouli, birch smoke, and ambergris stack into something darker and more chypre-grounded, giving the whole thing a second register that develops underneath. Bergamote 22 by Le Labo shows up in conversation as a similar fragrance in the same family.
The evolution
The opening is a high-gloss fruit cocktail. Pineapple leads, bergamot sharpens the edges, blackcurrant leaf and grapefruit add a green snap. Pink pepper simmers underneath, not sharp but warm, adding a low hum of spice that keeps the brightness from feeling cold. As the minutes pass, the chypre skeleton starts to surface. Jasmine arrives, not as a floral statement but as a bridge into the darker register, a brief floral pause before the composition tips earthward. Oakmoss and patchouli take over the architecture, vetiver adds an earthy coolness, and the first whispers of birch smoke curl in. By the time the fruit has receded, what's left reads as smoky, resinous, and mineral. The ambergris and musk in the base carry an animalic warmth that lingers close to the skin with above-average longevity, holding its shape well into the late hours.
Cultural impact
22 Shades of Poseidon sits in a specific corner of the fragrance conversation: the inspired-hybrid space, where houses take two well-known references and build something that borrows from both rather than aping one. The pineapple and bergamot at the top give it immediate, recognizable character, while the birch smoke and oakmoss base give it weight that earns attention as the day wears on. It reads as ambitious without being precious, and the contrast between its bright opening and smoky base is exactly the kind of structure that gets debated among people who care about how a fragrance changes over the course of a wear.
