The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wild Jasmine is part of The Body Shop's Choice Fragrance Collection. The brief centered on Indian jasmine, building a fragrance that doesn't require explanation. Violet leaf and white iris were incorporated into the composition, each bringing a different character to the jasmine. Violet leaf adds a green, cool dimension while white iris contributes a powdery softness. The jasmine sits at the center of the composition, creamy and full, with a warmth that feels natural rather than constructed. These three materials interact to create something that feels cohesive and intentional, with each note present without overpowering the others. The fragrance has a clarity to it, a directness that makes the jasmine the unquestioned focus.
The violet leaf in Wild Jasmine occupies a distinctive position within the fragrance's structure. Rather than appearing only as a fleeting top note, it extends into the heart of the composition, where it keeps the jasmine grounded in something mineral and cool. This prevents the jasmine from climbing into overly heady or indolic territory, instead maintaining a freshness that persists alongside the floral notes. White iris functions as a soft, powdered element that provides contrast to the green note.
The evolution
Indian jasmine arrives immediately, creamy and full, with a warmth that extends through the opening. The violet leaf shows up in the first minutes as well, adding a cool green undertone that keeps the jasmine from feeling heavy or cloying. Within the first ten minutes, the jasmine and violet leaf settle into a relationship where each seems to temper the other. The jasmine has a natural inclination toward bloom while the violet leaf provides something mineral and restrained. Around the thirty-minute mark, white iris begins to emerge more noticeably. The composition gains a powdery quality as the iris works alongside the jasmine, creating a softer floral effect. The drydown takes on a skin-like quality, intimate and close, with a softness that another person might only notice at close range. Some wearers find themselves wanting to apply it again as it fades.
Cultural impact
Jasmine has held a significant place in perfumery for centuries, particularly in Indian and Middle Eastern traditions where the flower carries associations with purity, love, and grace. The Body Shop's Wild Jasmine draws on this heritage, incorporating jasmine into a fragrance that speaks to the flower's enduring appeal. Wild Jasmine offers a fresh take on jasmine-centric perfumery, with a clarity and directness that distinguishes it from more complex compositions. The fragrance lets jasmine lead without apology, supported by notes that complement rather than compete.
