The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ascend, Love is the 2026 entry in Tadhana's Pause collection, a line built around stillness as ritual rather than absence. Perfumer Shale Albao framed the brief as a luminous floral for elevating rest, that soft edge of evening when light begins to dim, thoughts loosen at the edges, and the body remembers how to float. The name itself carries the intent. Ascend suggests something rising, and Love the quiet grace that allows rising. Both ideas meet in a composition that refuses to perform. There is no oud here, no projection war. The fragrance is structured to hold the wearer, not the room. Albao trained at ISIPCA in Versailles before opening her studio in Pasig, and her Filipino-rooted approach to mood over statement shapes every choice in this bottle.
What makes Ascend, Love distinctive is the way it handles aldehyde in 2026, a note family most modern perfumers have quietly retired in favor of sharper citrus openings. Here it functions differently. It is not the soapy, sparkling aldehyde of mid-century florals. It behaves more like a cool breath over warm florals, used to lift the composition rather than sparkle. The pairing of grapefruit with this restrained aldehyde treatment, followed by ylang-ylang and rose water rather than the expected jasmine or tuberose, marks the composition as deliberately quiet.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to grapefruit and aldehyde, and they announce themselves with a clean, weightless lift that reads almost like cold air moving through an open window. There is a slightly metallic freshness at the top, the kind of brightness that suggests glass and morning rather than fruit. As that top layer thins, the ylang-ylang arrives quietly, rounding the aldehyde without smothering it, followed by a soft rose water note that never tips into soapy or powdery territory. The bitter orange adds a faint citrus bitterness underneath, more peel than juice, and it keeps the heart from going too sweet. By hour three, the Australian sandalwood has begun to settle. The linen accord surfaces here, reading as clean warmth against skin rather than fabric. Fabric ensures the heart keeps a cool, breathable quality even as the warmer base notes emerge.
Cultural impact
Ascend, Love joins a growing current of Asian niche perfumery that prioritizes mood and cultural specificity over Western luxury conventions. Where many luminous florals lean on white-flower loudness and projection, this composition holds close, reading as the scent of someone who has stopped performing for the day. Within Tadhana's own catalog, it sits as the third deliberate beat in the Pause collection, following Innocent (2025) and Lover (2024), each fragrance a single emotional moment rather than a product line extension.
