The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Snif built its identity on playful naming and approachable pricing, making gender-neutral fragrance a stated goal from the start. In 2022 the brand asked perfumer Ugo Charron to take the classic powdery iris structure and give it unexpected life through spice and resin. The challenge was balancing warmth and coolness, making sure the familiar powdery character would not become nostalgic or overly soft. Charron was given a clear brief and the freedom to explore how myrrh, amber, and cedarwood could reshape an iris-centric heart without replacing its essential identity.
The note selection reflects a deliberate choice to build warmth into a structure that could otherwise feel cool and distant. Myrrh and amber prevent the iris from becoming purely atmospheric, giving it presence and weight. Cypress and angelica provide the aromatic lift that Snif wanted as an unexpected element, ensuring the scent reads as contemporary rather than nostalgic. Cedarwood and coriander were introduced to add woodiness and spice that would appeal to those who might otherwise find pure powdery florals too soft. The result is a fragrance designed for everyday wear, balancing approachability with enough complexity to reward close attention.
The evolution
Suganami opens immediately in its heart phase, which means the first impression is already intimate and complex. Iris and musk arrive together, establishing the powdery, skin-close character without preamble. Within the first hour, myrrh and amber begin to add warmth, creating a resinous cushion beneath the iris. Cypress and angelica contribute an aromatic, slightly green lift that prevents the scent from settling into sweetness. Cedarwood arrives by the second hour, introducing dry woodiness that anchors the composition. Coriander surfaces subtly, adding a spicy edge that contrasts with the soft powder. Rose weaves in and out, providing just enough floral nuance to keep the iris from feeling linear. By the final hours, the cedar and myrrh remain as faint warmth beneath a lingering iris-musk blend, creating a drydown that feels continuous rather than dramatically different from the heart.
Cultural impact
Suganami quickly became a favorite among Snif’s community for its gender‑neutral, powdery‑creamy profile that feels both modern and comforting. Wearers often describe it as the scent of an off‑duty model strolling through a sun‑lit studio, a vibe that aligns with Snif’s playful, clean‑oil ethos. Its balanced sillage makes it suitable for city life, earning steady mentions on social feeds as a go‑to everyday fragrance.
