The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
La Chatte takes its name from the French word for cat, that particular feline energy of elegance and unpredictability, softness with a side that's never quite domesticated. The name arrived with the fragrance in 2019, when perfumer Ekaterina Siordia was developing a new olfactory proposition. This was a fragrance about texture as much as notes, about the space between powdery softness and animalic warmth. The cat as metaphor works on multiple levels, the sleek surface, the purr underneath, the way a cat occupies a room without asking permission. La Chatte captures that duality, the initial impression of polished refinement giving way to something warmer, more intimate, more alive.
The composition centers on a tension between powdery florals and animalic warmth. The iris and violet provide that characteristic powdery softness, the kind that recalls old-fashioned vanity tables and talcum powder, but refined, modernized. The civet and castoreum are the counterweight: animalic notes that bring warmth and a hint of the feral, the smell of skin that has been warm for hours. Rose de Mai and jasmine sambac add sweetness and complexity, while vanilla and amber ground the florals in something richer.
The evolution
The opening arrives soft, iris and violet dust, the kind of powder that settles rather than announces. Within minutes, something warmer pushes through: amber and vanilla, a hint of peach sweetness. The civet doesn't hit you immediately; it builds. By the time the florals arrive, rose and jasmine sambac threading through, the animalic warmth has become part of the landscape, not an intrusion. The heart phase is where La Chatte shows its hand: powdery florals meeting animalic warmth, neither dominating. The jasmine sambac adds a creamy sweetness that could tip the composition toward the generic, but the civet keeps it grounded. Patchouli appears in the late drydown, bringing earthiness that cuts through the sweetness. The vanilla and musk linger longest, a warm, close-to-the-skin presence.
Cultural impact
La Chatte emerged from Siordia Parfums in 2019 as a fragrance that engages directly with themes of feline mystery and animalic warmth. The niche house positioned this scent as an exploration of unconventional pairing within a powdery iris framework, combining civet and castoreum in a way that feels both bold and intimate. This combination appeals to collectors who appreciate fragrances that challenge conventions while remaining wearable, those drawn to scents that reveal new facets with each wearing.
