The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sergey Gubanov launched his perfume house in 2015, the same year he introduced For Her as one of his debut compositions. The catalogue listed on Fragrantica shows a designer whose Russian background informs a growing body of work rooted firmly in the niche territory. For Her arrived as part of that opening wave, with For Him listed alongside it as a complementary release in the lineup. Coming first in a catalogue that would eventually encompass roughly fifteen scents, For Her set the tone for everything that followed. The composition reads like a portrait in olfaction: a study in how spice, wood, and resin can be layered into something dense, deliberate, and unmistakably its own statement.
The composition builds its character through collision rather than contrast, and that's where For Her does its most interesting work. Cumin and cinnamon do the loud work at the front, assertive and almost savory, but birch, thyme, and tonka bean layer in a herbaceous warmth that keeps the sweetness from drifting into dessert territory. The woods arrive in deliberate sequence: cypress lends a cool, resinous backbone, vetiver digs into the earth, and patchouli settles dark and grounding underneath.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a cumin-and-cinnamon handshake, assertive and almost savory, the kind of opening that announces itself before you've settled into your coat. Within the hour, birch and vetiver settle into the spine of the composition, pulling the spice down from bright to smoldering. The patchouli arrives dark and earthy, grounding the warmth while cedar and sandalwood add a dry, woody architecture underneath. By the three-hour mark, vanilla and tonka bean emerge from underneath the smoke, softening the edges without diluting the structure. The cumin never fully disappears; it just moves backstage, occasionally reminding you it's still in charge. The drydown settles into a warm, woody-spicy haze that clings rather than projects, the woods holding their shape beneath the lingering sweetness.
Cultural impact
Within the small but dedicated world of Russian niche perfumery, Sergey Gubanov's 2015 debut catalogue introduced a body of work rooted in dense, spice-forward compositions. For Her sits as part of that opening statement, with For Him listed alongside it in the designer's Fragrantica profile as a complementary release. The fragrance positions itself firmly within the woody-spicy territory, leaning on cumin, cinnamon, birch, thyme, tonka bean, and a foundation of cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli.
