The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ken Grand, drawing on his decades crafting botanically-authentic formulations for Alba Botanica, created Day in 2013 as Sarabecca's daytime offering. Grand's background in natural beauty production meant every material had to justify its presence through transparent sourcing. The choice to center jasmine, lily of the valley, and tuberose reflected Grand's interest in capturing garden florals at their most recognizable rather than their most interpretable. Santa Barbara's morning light, with its particular clarity, served as the conceptual anchor.
Grand's philosophy with Day centered on honesty. Rather than building complexity through layered development, he wanted a fragrance that presented its floral intentions immediately and maintained them without apology. The three-heart structure (jasmine, lily of the valley, tuberose) was chosen specifically for their complementary textures: jasmine's warmth, lily of the valley's coolness, and tuberose's richness. Pairing suggestions reflect this directness: the fragrance works best with minimal wardrobe choices that do not compete for attention.
The evolution
Day's evolution defies conventional fragrance storytelling. Without opening notes to signal arrival or drydown notes to signal departure, the journey reads differently. Jasmine announces first, bringing its characteristic sweetness and faint indolic edge. Lily of the valley follows within moments, adding crystalline freshness. Tuberose enters as the supporting presence, its creaminess preventing the blend from skewing too sharp. These three maintain their positions throughout wear, never yielding to a base phase. The arc is therefore lateral rather than vertical: a sustained floral presence rather than a developmental narrative.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 debut, Day has become a quiet favorite among lovers of clean, botanical perfumery. Wearers often describe it as the scent of a sunlit garden walk, a sentiment echoed in niche forums where the fragrance is praised for its honesty and lack of synthetic masking. Its natural composition has helped cement Sarabecca’s reputation as a pioneer of transparent, plant‑based luxury, influencing a wave of indie houses to adopt similar ethos.
