The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Past / Presence arrived in 2015 as part of Roads' Africa Collection, a quartet of fragrances built around the intersection of African heritage and contemporary creative expression. The brief was clear: elegance and depth drawn from the dignity and clarity of Nigeria's rich writing culture, both historical and modern. Where most fragrance briefs reach for landscapes or memories, Roads reached for literature, art, and dance. The collection explores themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage through carefully crafted olfactory compositions, with each fragrance offering a distinct perspective while maintaining a commitment to sophisticated design.
The structure is unusual. Bergamot opens clean, then cedes immediately to Lapsang Souchong, a smoked black tea that fills the space deliberately. Jasmine arrives not as a bouquet but as an undertone, dark and unsweetened, the way jasmine reads in a tea context. The tonka bean anchors everything with warmth that never overwhelms.
The evolution
The bergamot arrives first, bright, citrus-bright, almost astringent. Within minutes, the Lapsang Souchong smoke rises through it, not replacing the citrus but mingling with it. The jasmine settles quietly into the middle, not performing, just present, a whisper of floral against the smoke rather than a statement. Around the mid-point, the tonka bean emerges. Warm, slightly sweet, it doesn't transform the fragrance so much as soften its edges. The smoke never fully disappears. It simply becomes the background you stop noticing. As the fragrance develops on the skin, the initial sharp citrus notes gradually integrate with the smoky and floral elements, creating a cohesive experience that evolves subtly over time. The dry-down reveals the warmer tonka base more prominently while maintaining the smoky undertones as a persistent thread throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
The Africa Collection represents Roads' exploration of cultural heritage through fragrance. The collection approaches themes of African identity and creative expression with depth and nuance, creating scents that reflect complex cultural narratives rather than surface-level associations. Within this body of work, Past / Presence stands out for its distinctive character.
