The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oasis Verte arrived in 2017 as part of Rituals' Oriental Essence collection, a line built around the idea of hidden, fragrant worlds. The brief was simple: evoke a lush oasis concealed in the wilds of ancient Arabia. Vetiver and green patchouli were chosen as the foundation, two materials known for their earthy, grounding depth. The twist was the coolness, spring water and woody oak bringing a crisp, almost mineral freshness that cuts against the warmth. It wasn't trying to smell like sand and heat. It wanted to smell like shade.
What makes this composition unusual is the rhubarb in the heart. Rhubarb is tannic, tart, almost sour, a note more common in niche perfumery than in accessible masculine lines. Here it sits between the bright citrus opening and the woody base, acting as a bridge that keeps the fragrance from feeling linear. The violet and Bourbon geranium round it out, adding a quiet floral quality that softens the sharpness. The result is a scent that moves from crisp citrus to green tartness to earthy depth without any of the transitions feeling forced. Each layer earns its place.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly: grapefruit and Sicilian lime burst bright and sharp, pink pepper adding a gentle prickle at the edges. Fifteen minutes in, the rhubarb takes over, tart, green, almost vegetable in its honesty. It catches some people off guard. The violet and geranium arrive around the 30-minute mark, softening the tartness into something floral and calm. By the second hour, the base takes command. Vetiver and patchouli ground everything in earth and green wood. Cedar and oak linger beneath. On skin, expect 6-8 hours of quiet presence. On fabric, it can last through a wash cycle, the vetiver doesn't surrender easily.
Cultural impact
Oasis Verte developed a small devoted following before its discontinuation, with wearers frequently comparing it to Hermès Terre d'Hermès and Lalique Encre Noire. What drew people was the rhubarb, unusual enough to be memorable, balanced enough to wear daily. The moderate sillage suited its positioning as a personal, contemplative scent rather than a statement fragrance. Those who found it tend to keep the bottle and speak about it the way people speak about things that got away.
