The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Piece of Cake arrived in 2019, its title landing in a conversational register: familiar, slightly teasing, a phrase that suggests something offered without effort. Behind the name sits a composition that does anything but phone it in. Retrouvailles conceived the scent during its earliest period of output, and the result is a fragrance that doesn't quite fit any single category. That ambiguity seems intentional. The opening pushes toward something edible: honeyed pomelo laced with saffron, warm and almost pastry-like, while juniper berries thread a clean green brightness through that sweetness. It announces itself without shouting. As the saffron recedes, leather steps forward, and with it a structural shift.
What makes Piece of Cake distinctive is the structural tension between its layers. The opening reads bright and almost edible, pomelo and saffron creating a warmth that borders on pastry. But the heart pulls in a completely different direction. Leather and violet don't soften that spice; they sharpen it, adding a powdery coolness that keeps the composition from collapsing into sweetness. The base then introduces raspberry alongside vetiver and cashmeran, a move that gives the drydown both fruit and grit. This isn't a linear gourmand.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to pomelo and saffron, and they make their case loudly. There's a syrupy warmth here that recalls pastry, almost edible, with juniper berries threading a clean green edge through the sweetness. It announces itself without shouting. As the saffron recedes, the leather arrives, and with it a structural shift. Violet cools the temperature, the rose adds a soft floral cushion, and the composition takes on the feel of worn suede. This is the phase where Piece of Cake reveals its architecture. The fruit and spice haven't vanished; they've been redirected. What felt sweet now reads warm, tactile, almost second-skin. Over the next several hours, raspberry emerges in the base, darker than expected, set against vetiver's dry earthiness and the woody warmth of cashmeran. The drydown doesn't disappear so much as it settles into something quieter.
Cultural impact
Piece of Cake represents a willingness to mix registers, fruit and spice alongside rougher materials like vetiver and leather. The name itself fits the house's conversational approach to titling, suggesting something offered without ceremony, while the composition underneath takes its time. The interplay between gourmand-leaning top notes and rougher base materials gives the scent its tension, and that tension is what holds the whole thing together. Within the brand's own catalog, it stands as a composition that refuses to settle into one category, pulling bright citrus and warm spice into dialogue with suede, earth, and wood.
