The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
#laislablanca is named for Ibiza, La Isla Blanca, the White Island, and the fragrance carries that identity without apology. Ramon Monegal built this around the tension the island embodies: Mediterranean sun and sea salt, pine forests that drop straight into azure water, the particular white light that earned the island its name. The notes structure reflects this duality. Pine needles and blackcurrant arrive sharp and resinous, catching like cold air off the Mediterranean. Dates add a sun-dried sweetness that tempers the green. Then ylang-ylang and almond blossom take over, warm and creamy, their sweet floral character blooming against the green opening.
The combination of pine needles and dates is unusual, evergreen resin meets fruit sweetness, a tension that most fragrances resolve by choosing a side. #laislablanca refuses. The blackcurrant pushes in at the start, tart and slightly bitter, keeping the sweetness honest. It doesn't let the composition drift into pure fantasy. The heart notes, ylang-ylang, almond blossom, heliotrope, create what perfumers call a yellow floral accord. Warm, creamy, with powdery depth. This is the part of the fragrance that reviewers call tropical, that reads as beach cocktail or sea breeze depending on your reference. It's not literal, there's no coconut or salt accord, but the warmth is unmistakable.
The evolution
The opening lands mineral and bright. Pine needles hit first, resinous and green, followed immediately by blackcurrant, tart, almost medicinal before it softens. The dates are there from the start, a subtle sweetness that keeps the green from becoming sharp. This phase reads like standing at the treeline of a Mediterranean pine forest, sea visible between the trunks. The progression continues as ylang-ylang blooms warm and creamy, pushing out the sharper green notes. Almond blossom adds something softer, almost powdery, while heliotrope deepens the warmth. The composition becomes less like a landscape and more like skin, warm, floral, intimate. As the drydown settles, frankincense appears, smoky and resinous, alongside guaiac wood. Sandalwood takes over as the dominant warmth, and the base holds and holds, a quiet trail that doesn't demand attention but refuses to disappear.
Cultural impact
Released in 2023 as part of Monegal's Ibiza collection, #laislablanca speaks to the island's distinctive character through its fragrance. The narrative draws from island light, pine forests, and the broader Mediterranean landscape that defines Ibiza's sensory identity. This aligns with the house's approach of building scents around concrete ideas rather than abstract moods. The fragrance carries enough presence to work as evening scent, appealing to wearers who appreciate a scent with character and lasting influence.
