The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name asks a question: Pra Onde Levam Esses Olhos Castanhos?, Where do these brown eyes lead? It borrows from Brazilian musical tradition, from a song that never quite answered the question it posed. That ambiguity lives in the fragrance itself. Created in 2012 by perfumer Olivier Gillotin, this is a scent that starts somewhere bright and tropical and arrives somewhere warmer, more intimate. The name sets expectations of a story. The fragrance tells it anyway.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between the bright and the warm. Pineapple doesn't usually share space with jasmine, the first is all sharp tropical energy, the second is soft, almost powdery. Here, Gillotin lets them meet at peach, a fruit that belongs to both worlds. The amber base isn't heavy, it's sun-warmed, the kind of amber that suggests skin at golden hour rather than resin in a bottle. Sandalwood and musk hold the warmth without tipping into sweetness. The result is fruity without being juvenile, warm without being heavy.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, bergamot and mandarin lift the pineapple so it reads juicy and bright, not sticky. Thirty minutes in, the citrus recedes and jasmine takes over, softened by peach into something powdery and intimate. That's the hand-off: fruit passes the baton to florals, and the energy shifts from playful to warm. The amber arrives quietly around the two-hour mark, settling under the jasmine like a second skin. Sandalwood and musk keep it there, close, warm, lasting past when you'd expect it to fade. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint and sweet.
Cultural impact
This fragrance stands as a playful rebellion within the Brazilian perfumery landscape, where bold tropical interpretations often get overshadowed by international releases. Quem Disse Berenice has carved a niche in challenging the notion that local fragrances must imitate their European counterparts. The bright citrus and fruity composition reflects a distinctly Brazilian sunshine-forward aesthetic rather than mimicking Parisian sophistication. Within the brand's portfolio, this scent speaks to younger consumers seeking identity through accessible luxury that feels native rather than imported.
