The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Versilia Aurum arrived in 2011 from Arturetto Landi, the nose behind Profumi del Forte's Versilia line. The name carries its own meaning: aurum is gold in Latin, and this fragrance was composed as an olfactory translation of Versilia's coastal light. Landi reached instead for richness, warmth, and a certain theatricality in his composition. The Versilia line draws from Tuscany's coastal region, where the brand roots its identity in place and memory. The fragrance captures the essence of that distinctive coastal atmosphere, where light plays across the landscape in ways that feel both expansive and intimate. This approach to capturing regional character runs through the entire Versilia collection, with Aurum serving as a particularly full expression of the line's guiding philosophy.
What makes Aurum unusual is its pyramid structure. The strawberry-orange-plum opening functions as an overture, establishing the fruity foundation that will support everything that follows. The real composition begins in the heart, where seven floral materials coexist without muddying. The inclusion of heliotrope and iris alongside expected white florals adds a powdery dimension that elevates the sweetness rather than amplifying it. These powdery notes create a counterpoint to the fruit, preventing the fragrance from becoming simply sweet.
The evolution
Versilia Aurum opens with a bright burst of fruit, strawberry arrives first, almost jammy, then orange zest cuts through to keep things lively, and plum rounds everything into a soft sweetness. The citrus does not evaporate quickly; it lingers alongside the fruit, creating a sunlit opening that feels ripe without being syrupy. This initial phase establishes the fruity foundation that will persist throughout the fragrance's development. Then the flowers take over. Tuberose and ylang-ylang arrive together, tropical and lush, while jasmine and rose add depth beneath them. The iris surfaces as the heart develops, bringing a powdery elegance that prevents the floral middle from becoming heavy or cloying. This powdery note threads through the floral heart, creating a sophisticated balance between sweetness and restraint. As the fragrance continues to develop, the base begins to emerge.
Cultural impact
Versilia Aurum arrived as part of a broader moment when niche perfumery was gaining attention from fragrance enthusiasts seeking alternatives to mainstream offerings. Profumi del Forte had been producing artisan fragrances, with the 2011 launch of Aurum representing a significant addition to their collection. The composition reflects the brand's ongoing commitment to capturing regional identity through fragrance, drawing inspiration from Versilia's luminous coastal atmosphere.
