The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
pH Fragrances launched in 2018 with Patchouli & Cedre de Tweed as part of its collection. The fragrance opens with bright grapefruit, bringing an immediate citrus clarity that sets the stage for what follows. As the composition develops, earthy patchouli emerges, grounding the scent in darker, more complex territory. The heart combines Atlas cedar with Cashmeran, creating a warm, woody presence that adds depth and sophistication. This layering of bright, earthy, and woody elements reflects the brand's approach to creating nuanced fragrances that evolve over time. The overall effect is a scent that moves from crisp citrus through earthy depth to warm, draped woods, inviting the wearer to discover something unexpected in each phase of the experience.
The structure makes this unusual. Patchouli & Cedre de Tweed leads with grapefruit, a bright citrus that could belong to a completely different fragrance. Then the patchouli arrives, earthy and camphoraceous, grounding the composition in something darker and more interesting. The heart brings Atlas cedar alongside Cashmeran, a material that adds a soft, almost suede-like warmth to the cedar's dry pencil-shaving character. It's the cashmeran that makes the woods feel draped rather than austere.
The evolution
The opening is the tell. Grapefruit arrives crisp and almost sparkling, a citrus clarity that sets the stage before the patchouli emerges from beneath it. That initial brightness isn't decoration, it's contrast. Once the patchouli settles in, the composition shifts toward something earthier, darker, with a slight camphor edge that gives the top notes a green, grounded quality. The heart phase introduces Atlas cedar and Cashmeran together, and this is where the fragrance finds its voice. The cedar brings dry, resinous weight. The cashmeran softens it, wrapping the wood in something plush and almost tactile. During this phase, the sillage projects well, filling a room with a warm, smoky presence that sits close without being heavy.
Cultural impact
pH Fragrances brings a distinctive perspective to contemporary niche fragrance, focusing on creating scents with depth and intentionality. Patchouli & Cedre de Tweed exemplifies this approach, offering a woody, smoky, earthy character that feels both sophisticated and grounded. The fragrance moves beyond simple decoration, presenting a nuanced composition where bright citrus, earthy patchouli, and warm cedar interact to create something more complex and intentional.
