The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
HC5 Madera Oud captures the essence of one of perfumery's most complex materials. Created by José Alejandro Palafox Padilla and launched in 2020, this fragrance approaches oud through a distinctive lens, presenting the ingredient in a way that feels both refined and accessible.
The answer lies in structure. Rather than opening with oud's famous intensity, Madera Oud builds a citrus-and-wood foundation that carries the heavier material gracefully. Sandalwood and Palisander Rosewood form the architectural core, their creamy, slightly sweet timber creating a bridge between the bright top and the assertive base. Gurjan Balsam adds aromatic resin without aggression, a supporting player that enriches without competing.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly: bergamot and lemon, citrus peel rather than juice. There is a brief green quality from the Gurjan Balsam before the heart woods arrive. Sandalwood and rosewood do not rush; they arrive measured, settling into the composition like furniture finding its place in a room. The oud does not crash the arrival. It edges in quietly, its smoky, slightly animalic character mixing with Bourbon vetiver's earthy root and the sweet warmth of vanilla. Within the first hour, the fragrance settles into its register: warm, close, and lasting. The drydown holds for hours on skin, becoming a skin-warm presence rather than a projection. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, the vetiver and oud compressed into something quiet and persistent.
Cultural impact
Within Perfumérica's catalog, Madera Oud occupies a specific space: it presents oud in a way that feels approachable rather than imposing. The fragrance avoids the heavy intensity often associated with the ingredient, offering instead a composition that introduces the material to those who might otherwise shy away from it. Its approach to oud is sensory and grounded, focusing on the actual character of the ingredient rather than any particular tradition or interpretation.
