The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mr Harrod is part of Penhaligon's Portraits collection, a lineup of fragrances built around fictional characters rather than abstract scent profiles. The 2017 release was crafted by master perfumer Loc Dong and exists exclusively at Harrods, which means it was designed for a very specific customer: someone who shops at one of the world's most distinguished department stores, someone who appreciates discretion over flash. The character of Mr Harrod isn't printed anywhere official, but the scent paints a clear picture. This is a man of substance. The kind who leaves an impression without trying.
The note structure is unusually layered for a 2017 release. Where most fruity-florals in that era leaned light and safe, Mr Harrod goes deeper, the raspberry-cinnamon opening quickly hands off to a plum-jasmine heart that's unexpectedly warm, then drops anchor in tobacco absolute, oud, and ambergris. That base is the tell. Tobacco absolute isn't sweet pipe tobacco, it's the resinous, almost leathery residue that clings to skin. Paired with oud and ambergris, it creates a drydown that reads as expensive without being ostentatious. Cashmeran adds a synthetic-musk softness that keeps the whole thing from going sharp.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and fruity, raspberry's sweetness undercut immediately by cinnamon's warmth. It's the sweetest moment. Thirty minutes in, the jasmine appears, softening the spice, and the plum starts to deepen the composition. The handoff feels almost imperceptible, sweetness giving way to something richer without a sharp transition. By the second hour, the tobacco and oud arrive. Not aggressively, the ambergris keeps the edge round. But there's weight now. Presence. The drydown isn't a single note; it's layers of wood and resin settling into skin, the cashmeran adding a closeness that stays intimate even as the sillage trails off. Eight to ten hours on most skin. The next morning? A faint ambergris warmth on fabric. Not loud. Just there.
Cultural impact
Mr Harrod enjoys a loyal following among fragrance enthusiasts who regard it as a sophisticated and romantic expression within the Portraits collection. Wearers consistently describe it as elegant and memorable, with the plum-tobacco pairing drawing particular praise. The Harrods exclusivity adds to its appeal as a collector's piece.
