The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tolla Pegasus arrived in 2014 as a deliberate act of intensification. Parfums de Marly had already established Pegasus as one of its signature compositions, a confident vanilla-almond statement that wore its old-world elegance like a tailored coat. The brief was simple: take that foundation and make it more. The answer was Soufi Oudh, a pure and resinous agarwood that transforms the original's sweetness into something with more shadow. The name itself tells you everything, Tolla is the intervention, the twist, the moment Pegasus stops being polite and starts being necessary.
What makes this composition work is the counterpoint between Pegasus's established warmth and the oud's resinous depth. Bitter almond and lavender form a bridging accord, familiar enough to feel like home, unusual enough to feel like discovery. The heliotrope adds that distinctive powdery metallic note that Parfums de Marly uses as a signature texture across several flankers. Cumin appears in small enough quantities to provide body without crossing into extremes. Vanilla and amber in the base do what they always do: smooth, deepen, and make the wearing feel inevitable.
The evolution
The opening is the shortest chapter. Heliotrope's cool powder arrives first, metallic and almost mineral, that distinctive PdM texture, then cumin arrives to warm it, just slightly. Bergamot is gone within minutes, leaving the stage to bitter almond and lavender, which settle into something almost soapy-clean before the oud enters. That's the surprise: the oud doesn't dominate, it complicates. It sits underneath the vanilla like a dark hand beneath a white glove. The drydown lasts longest, sandalwood and amber create a creamy warmth that stays close to skin for hours, the kind of smell someone notices when you're close, not across the room.
Cultural impact
As a discontinued flanker of the beloved Pegasus, Tolla Pegasus has become a collector's consideration, the version with more shadow, more depth, more oud. It occupies a specific niche within the Parfums de Marly lineup: for those who loved Pegasus but wanted it to lean darker. The limited availability has made it a quiet grail among enthusiasts, traded in secondary markets rather than found in department stores.
