The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nest New York was founded in 2008 in New York City, translating candle-making expertise into a line of sleek personal fragrances that aim to lift everyday moments with clean, mood-enhancing scents. Released in 2016, Citrine was imagined by perfumer Cecile Hua, also known as Cecile Krakower, to bottle the feeling of a bright morning in a sleek, modern flacon. Drawing on Nest's heritage of translating home-fragrance expertise into personal wear, the composition balances a single citrus star with dewy florals and restrained woody depth to create something that feels both fresh and grounded.
The note structure reflects a deliberate philosophy: start bright, transition crystalline, close quietly. Lemon Blossom takes the single star role rather than overwhelmed by competing citrus, allowing clarity in the opening. The heart combines Freesia for sweetness, Lotus for delicate floral warmth, and Dew Drop for transparent freshness that supports rather than dominates the florals. Woody Notes in the drydown provide just enough depth to keep the scent from reading as purely linear, adding quiet structure that prevents it from disappearing entirely. The pairing rationale prioritizes cohesion and restraint over dramatic contrast, producing a scent that unfolds smoothly rather than transforming dramatically.
The evolution
The scent journey traces a clear arc from morning brightness to crystalline florals to quiet grounding. Lemon Blossom opens bright and clean, radiating immediately with a lifted citrus quality that feels sunlit. As the opening settles within the first fifteen minutes, the heart of Freesia, Dew Drop, and Lotus emerges seamlessly, pushing the composition toward cool transparency rather than further citrus intensity. The aquatic notes from Dew Drop create a connective freshness that keeps the florals from reading as heavy or sweet, instead preserving a dewdrop clarity that mirrors the fresh start of a morning garden. This heart persists for the majority of the wear, with the florals gradually softening and the aquatic freshness fading. Woody Notes arrive in the drydown to provide the final chapter, offering subtle structure without dramatic contrast, settling the scent into a quiet, clean closure that honors the restraint established throughout the composition.
Cultural impact
Citrine quickly became a go‑to choice for those seeking a cheerful, office‑friendly scent. Its bright citrus‑floral profile is often mentioned alongside Nest’s Holiday and Grapefruit as part of the brand’s signature “daylight” family, appealing to wearers who favor a light, uplifting aroma that doesn’t dominate shared spaces.
