The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name comes from rally, Finnish rally drivers of the past, who the brand describes as explorers and movie stars the country never officially had. They drove places most people only dreamed of, lived sideways in ways that felt cinematic. Ralli is a homage to that spirit: the longing for somewhere else, somewhere warmer, somewhere the road leads that the Nordic winter can't reach. Perfumer Jordi Fernández translated this into scent, not literally, but emotionally. Adventure as olfaction.
What makes Ralli's structure work is how the rose and oud operate in tension rather than harmony. Rose typically plays sweet or romantic. Here it arrives with an edge, tangy, almost austere, before the oud softens everything into amber warmth. The patchouli adds an earthy undertone that keeps the composition grounded rather than soaring. It's a rose that went somewhere and came back different.
The evolution
The first five minutes are the most arresting: rose and cedar cutting sharp and clean, almost astringent. Within ten minutes, the oud enters and rounds the edges. The cedar doesn't disappear, it persists, a spine running through the heart. By the second hour, amber and vanilla have taken over. The sillage becomes intimate, close to the skin rather than announcing itself. By hour six, you're left with a warm musk and faint trace of patchouli, the drydown that lingers on fabric long after you've showered.
Cultural impact
Ralli by Nakuna Helsinki represents a distinctly Nordic take on oriental perfumery. Founded in 2019, this Finnish house launched its debut collection in 2020 with five fragrances, of which Ralli stands as the house's oriental entry. Rather than following the rich, opulent rose-oud traditions of Middle Eastern perfumery, Nakuna Helsinki applies its minimalist Nordic sensibility to the genre. The result is a fragrance where rose goes mineral rather than romantic, where cedar provides sharp contrast rather than sweetness. This drier, more austere interpretation positions Ralli as a counterpoint to mainstream oriental releases, appealing to those who want the warmth of amber and vanilla but reject saccharine sweetness.
