The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mikimoto and Lalique, two heritage houses with over a century of mastery between them, joined forces in 2025 for Fortune Leaves Crystal Edition. The collaboration brings together Mikimoto's cultured pearl legacy and Lalique's French crystal artistry in a fragrance limited to 10 pieces worldwide. Alexander Lee composed the scent around an unconventional structure: angelica in dual forms, mastic resin, and orris root anchoring a mineral core. The name Fortune Leaves nods to Lalique's clover-shaped crystal flacon, a symbol of chance rendered in limited-edition glass. For Mikimoto, the partnership extends their pearl philosophy into new territory, where luminescence takes the form of crystal rather than nacre.
What makes Fortune Leaves Crystal Edition stand apart is the persistent mineral thread running through every phase of its development. Mineral notes rarely anchor a fragrance from opening to drydown, but here they do, providing a cold, almost atmospheric quality that lifts the herbal angelica and gives the powdery orris something to breathe against. The ambrette seed absolute in the base is a quieter revelation: musk-like warmth without animalic weight, a sustainable alternative to traditional musks that still delivers lasting presence on skin.
The evolution
The opening arrives sharp and aromatic. Angelica seed and pink pepper hit first, a cold, almost biting sensation that recalls cracking open a seed pod in winter. Mineral threads through immediately, keeping the green from tipping into sweetness. This phase lasts roughly 30 to 45 minutes, the herbs softening as the skin warms. Over the next two hours, the heart opens. Angelica root and mastic absolute take over, the resinous green of the mastic giving the heart a pine-like clarity. Orris concrete emerges gradually, its powdery iris facet appearing like light filtering through fog. The rose stays quiet at this stage, a suggestion rather than a statement. The mineral persists, now reading as warm stone rather than cold air. The drydown is where Fortune Leaves Crystal Edition earns its name. Rose becomes more present, warm and soft against the mineral base. Ambrette and musk create a powdery warmth that clings close to the skin, lasting well beyond the initial hours. On fabric, the mineral stays detectable the next day, a quiet reminder of what came before.
Cultural impact
Fortune Leaves Crystal Edition is a 2025 collaboration between Mikimoto and Lalique, released as a limited edition of 10 pieces worldwide. The fragrance sits at the intersection of two heritage disciplines: pearl-adjacent jewelry and French crystal. Its mineral-forward, powdery iris character places it within a specific niche of refined, intimate compositions rather than the broader floral market. The Lalique crystal flacon, shaped like a clover, ties the fragrance to collector culture and adds a visual dimension that extends its appeal beyond scent alone.
