Why it exists.
The beginning
Dianesque by Marylise Mirabelli is a 2022 extrait de parfum, a composition with a clear conceptual anchor: it's inspired by the song Dirty Diana, and that inspiration runs straight through the scent like a current. Perfumer Elia Chiche built a leathery, powdery, violet-driven composition around that reference point, a spicy floral with a base that refuses to behave. The violet comes forward first, cool and cosmetic, almost confectionary in its sweetness, before the whole thing tilts toward something warmer and stranger. There's cumin humming at the heart, a smoky undertow beneath the powder, and a leather drydown that clings to skin with the kind of persistence you expect from extrait strength. It's not a literal soundtrack in a bottle.
What makes Dianesque structurally interesting is how it refuses to settle into a single category. The accord stack lists it as powdery, leathery, smoky, and animalic simultaneously, four descriptors that most people wouldn't expect to share a bottle. The violet-powder axis does the initial heavy lifting, softened by iris and heliotrope into something almost cosmetic, the kind of cool that reads as makeup counter rather than meadow. Then cumin arrives at the heart and tilts the whole composition toward warmth, sweat, skin.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to violet and smoke. The violet reads cosmetic and cool, almost like the dust inside a vintage compact, while the smoke drifts underneath like cigarette haze through an open window. Pink pepper adds a brief flicker of sharpness before it recedes into the larger composition, leaving only a faint prickle behind. As the minutes pass, the iris and heliotrope have thickened the powder into something denser, creamier, and the cumin begins its slow burn, almost imperceptible at first and then suddenly everywhere. This is where the fragrance shifts register: the cool cosmetic opening gives way to something warmer, more bodily, slightly animalic, the kind of warmth that suggests skin rather than fabric.
