The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oriental Soul began with a question: what does the soul of the East smell like when it isn't trying to prove anything? Philippine Courtière built the answer around Damascene rose, the variety that grows in Hadi Masmoum's memory of open-air courtyards in the Eastern Mediterranean. That rose anchors the heart, but it doesn't work alone. Basil opens the composition with an herbaceous sharpness that most oriental fragrances skip entirely, and the base stacks Agarwood and Kyara Oud to ground everything in resinous, smoky depth. Released in 2019 as part of the GENESIS COLLECTION, Oriental Soul is refillable and made in France, practical choices that don't compromise the scent inside.
Basil in an oriental fragrance is an unusual move. It reads green, almost medicinal, which makes the warm vanilla-rose heart feel like a discovery rather than an expectation. The rose isn't a soft petal arrangement, it's the Damascene variety, with a spiced floral quality that sits closer to the oud than to any delicate rose accord. Kyara Oud adds another layer: not just agarwood's smoky depth, but something almost camphoraceous, a quality that keeps the base from becoming merely sweet. The combination creates a fragrance that shifts between cool and warm depending on the wearer's chemistry, neither fully one nor the other.
The evolution
The opening hits within seconds. Basil's green bite cuts through amber's resinous warmth, and there's a faint trace of incense underneath, not heavy, just present. Within twenty minutes, the rose and vanilla take over. The vanilla doesn't dominate; it cushions the rose's spiced floral character, and together they push the fragrance toward warmth without sweetness. The drydown is where Oriental Soul earns its name. Agarwood and Kyara Oud arrive together, bringing smoky depth that lingers for hours. The kyara adds a slight camphor-like edge that keeps the base from becoming predictable. On fabric, expect 10+ hours. On skin, 8-10 hours is the norm, with the first two hours projecting strongly before settling into intimate sillage.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 launch, Oriental Soul has earned a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate an entry point into oud that doesn't overwhelm newcomers. The basil opening provides enough freshness to keep the oriental warmth from becoming heavy. The combination of Damascene rose heritage and accessible pricing positions it as a bridge fragrance, serious enough for enthusiasts, approachable enough for newcomers.
