The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maison Violet treats historic formulas as a conversation starter rather than a fixed script. CYCLE 001 was created by Patrice Revillard in 2020 as part of the house's exploration of this philosophy, whether returning to familiar olfactory territory could yield something new. The cycle metaphor suggests ritual, a daily practice, the idea that the same action can be experienced differently each time. That's what this fragrance asks: what happens when you go back to something you've already known?
Angelica root is the material that makes CYCLE 001 unlike most powdery fragrances. It's herbaceous, slightly medicinal, with a faint anise quality that some people find polarizing and others find addictive. When paired with iris, it creates a tension between green freshness and powdery softness that gives this fragrance its character. The frankincense and ambroxan add warmth and ambery depth, while vetiver provides an earthy counterpoint that keeps the powder from becoming too sweet.
The evolution
The opening is sharp, angelica's green, slightly spicy character arrives first, quickly joined by pink and black pepper for brightness. Within minutes, iris enters the picture, bringing its signature powdery, violet-like softness. As the fragrance settles, the musk becomes more apparent, blended with heliotrope's almond sweetness and frankincense's faint smoke. The ambroxan provides a warm, ambery base, and the vetiver adds an earthy depth that grounds everything. The drydown stays intimate and close to the skin, a warm, powdery signature that lingers for hours. On fabric, the powdery iris and musk hold their ground, and into the next day, a faint trace remains.
Cultural impact
CYCLE 001 has found its audience among niche fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate its angelica-forward take on the floral musk structure. The slightly medicinal quality adds distinctiveness rather than feeling medicinal. Its unisex character and powdery-musky personality position it as a contemporary interpretation within the niche fragrance landscape.
