Why it exists.
The beginning
Shawn Maher built Sun Soaked around a single phrase he couldn't shake: the idea of something so saturated with sunlight it would overflow. Released in 2021, the composition is his attempt to bottle that sensory overflow. Not a literal citrus splash, but the fullness of a day when solar energy thickens the air and every plant along the path seems to exhale at once. There's an intentional quietness to the result. Bright, yes, but built with structural care: neroli as the radiant surface, chamomile and narcissus adding depth, cedar and amber anchoring the whole thing to warm wood. The neroli reads as sunlight caught mid-afternoon, that honeyed almost metallic flash before the petals bruise and soften.
What makes this composition worth attention is the tension between radiance and restraint. Neroli is a luminous, expressive material, and Maher chose to make it the central nervous system rather than a fleeting accent. Blackcurrant bud, that green catty absolute, pulls the citrus sideways, introducing a slightly metallic snap that keeps the neroli from becoming simple sweetness. Chamomile rounds everything into herbal territory, its apple-skin warmth softening the citrus without dulling it.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a citrus overture done correctly. Bitter orange and neroli arrive together, sharpened by blackcurrant bud's green metallic edge. Chamomile softens the edges almost immediately, pulling the brightness into something rounder, warmer, almost honeyed. Within the first ninety minutes, the neroli has settled into the heart and the narcissus begins to register: a creamy, slightly indolic floral weight that gives the composition its body. The chamomile deepens too, adding that apple-meets-hay quality that makes chamomile so distinct from other herbal notes. By hour four, the cedar has fully emerged. It's not a sharp cedar, more the dry warmth of sun-warmed wood. The amber grounds everything, adding a golden resinous hum that stays close to skin. On fabric the next morning, you'll catch cedar, amber, and the ghost of chamomile. It doesn't project much after the first two hours, but what remains is genuinely beautiful: a quiet, sun-warmed wood-and-floral whisper that earns its longevity through restraint rather than volume.

Sun Soaked has earned a place in conversations about neroli-forward independent perfumery for the way it commits to its central material.
