Shawn Maher
Shawn Maher grew up amid the rolling hills of the Ozarks, where the scent of pine and river water sparked his curiosity. After years of touring as a musician, he turned his ear to the chemistry of fragrance, recognizing that composing a scent mirrors writing a song. In 2015 he launched Chatillon Lux, a house that tells the hidden histories of his hometown through scent. Five years later he founded Maher Olfactive, giving him full control over every ingredient and bottle. The perfume community named him Perfumer of the Year in 2020, and his output now eclipses many historic masters. Today he lives in St. Louis, where he continues to translate memory into perfume.

How Shawn composes
Maher favors natural absolutes and rare isolates, often layering citrus top notes with unexpected heart accords of honeysuckle or smoked woods. He builds structure by anchoring scents with resinous amber or earthy vetiver, then adds a whisper of spice to create tension. His background in music informs his approach: he composes with a clear intro, a developing middle, and a lingering finale. He prefers hand‑blending in small batches, allowing him to adjust balance in real time.
Philosophy
What drives Shawn
Maher treats each formula as a conversation between the past and the present. He believes a fragrance should evoke an emotion before it registers a note, letting the wearer feel rather than merely smell. His work draws from personal archives—childhood landscapes, musical motifs, and forgotten local legends. He refuses to follow trends; instead, he asks each raw material what story it wants to tell. This honesty drives his relentless experimentation and keeps his creations fresh and intimate.
