The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maese Pau, the Spanish atelier behind Voc, looked to the historic Dutch East India Company for inspiration. The original VOC once commanded clove-laden ships across equatorial waters, and this fragrance captures that spirit of exotic commerce and coastal warmth. Perfumer Pablo Emanuel Locascio Poletto built Voc as a olfactory map of those voyages, where tropical ingredients and resinous aromatics mingled in ship's holds. Every element, from cardamom to ambrette, speaks to ingredients that once traveled those ancient routes.
The note philosophy here is one of accumulation rather than subtraction. Where many fragrances strip away complexity to find clarity, Voc piles richness upon richness, trusting the wearer to navigate the density. The pairing of frangipani with cacao, of camphor wood with ambergris, creates unexpected dialogues between warm tropical florals and cool, resinous woods. Each ingredient justifies its presence through contribution to the whole, and no single note dominates for long.
The evolution
The arc of Voc moves like a ship entering port. Cardamom and neroli launch the journey, their spicy, citrusy brightness cutting through like sea air. Frangipani and coconut bloom next, painting the tropics in creamy florals. Cacao and mulberry arrive with dark sweetness, grounding the brightness before myrrh and resinous notes deepen the composition into darker territory. Camphor wood provides a cool, medicinal pause, and then vanilla, ambergris, and orris root smooth the transition. The final passage belongs to cedarwood, ambrette, and myrrh, a warm and persistent conclusion.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Voc has been embraced by scent enthusiasts who see it as a modern tribute to the age of exploration. Wearers often describe the fragrance as evoking the aroma of a spice‑laden caravan arriving at a Mediterranean port, linking history with contemporary gourmand trends. Its blend of cardamom and cacao places it alongside niche fragrances that celebrate trade‑route heritage, making it a conversation starter in both casual and curated scent circles.
