The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
2006. Lulu Castagnette had already established itself as the house that understood playful femininity, effortless, warm, never overwrought. That year, the brand released two fragrances. One was Luluforever, light and airy. The other was Lulu: a concentrated oriental composition designed to seduce rather than float. Antoine Lie and Guillaume Flavigny built this one around sweetness, but the kind that feels considered. Not a tropical sugar-bomb. Something with nuance, with berries that carry a subtle tartness, with florals that linger close enough to feel intimate rather than overwhelming. The composition balances fruit-forward brightness with deeper, richer undertones that give it presence without becoming heavy.
The sweetness in Lulu is intentional and carefully contained. Blueberry anchors the opening with a jammy, slightly tart sweetness that distinguishes this from generic fruit mixes. The heart pairs frangipani, creamy and tropical, with datura, a flower that carries an intoxicating quality. Violet adds powdery softness, rounding out the floral complexity. Each layer builds upon the last, creating a composition that feels both inviting and complex, where the fruit notes and florals exist in careful balance rather than competing for attention.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: blueberry brightness sharpened by grapefruit and mandarin. Think Sunday morning candy, the kind you unwrap slowly. The citrus fades, leaving the florals to settle in. Frangipani and datura blend into something creamy but with an edge, while violet keeps things powdery and soft. The drydown is where Lulu becomes something more personal. Vanilla and tonka bean create a warm, sweet base that doesn't cloy. Sandalwood, vetiver, and musk hold it close to the skin. The sweetness never disappears entirely, it just matures. What started as bubblegum becomes the memory of sweetness. The kind that lingers on a pillowcase, on a scarf, on skin you've been wearing close.
Cultural impact
Lulu landed in 2006 as the seductive counterpart to Luluforever within the brand's two-fragrance release that year. The composition positioned itself as a concentrated oriental, sweet and designed to make an impression. Within the brand's portfolio, it represents the warmer expression of the vision that Lulu Castagnette had been developing with its earlier work. The fragrance brings together fruity brightness and oriental richness in a way that feels cohesive rather than conflicting.
