The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Late 2023 found Daniela Carrasco in her Hudson Valley studio, experimenting with a blend that could capture the moment a garden awakens after a summer rain. She paired a bright green accord with lemon and a daring pinch of saffron, then let jasmine sambac take center stage, echoing the fresh bouquet that emerges when droplets still cling to petals. This initial burst was designed to feel like stepping outside after a storm, that first breath of renewal.
Each note in Lately @5 serves as a trigger for memory and sensation. Green and lemon evoke that fresh, rain-washed quality; saffron introduces an element of the unexpected, something precious and warm. Jasmine and white flowers represent abundance and floral richness, while hinoki grounds the composition in something ancient and contemplative. Vanilla offers sweetness and comfort, and smoke adds that final layer of atmosphere, the sense of place and moment preserved in scent.
The evolution
From the vibrant, citrusy spice of the opening, the composition softens into something more Intimate as jasmine and white flowers step forward, their fragrance amplified by the humidity still hanging in the air. The green and saffron notes gently recede, becoming a memory within the scent rather than a statement. The drydown marks a shift toward introspection, where hinoki's elegant woodiness grounds the florals, vanilla adds unexpected comfort, and a whisper of smoke creates atmosphere, like the garden settling into evening after the rain has passed.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Lately @5 has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its bold green‑spice opening and unapologetically smoky drydown. Reviewers note its sunny citrus‑jasmine heart as a fresh alternative to typical white‑floral scents, while the subtle smoke earns nods for adding depth without heaviness. It’s become a go‑to for those seeking a confident, unisex fragrance that feels both garden‑bright and evening‑soft.
