The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Les Petits Plaisirs makes fragrances from the flavors of ordinary pleasure, ripe fruit, soft flowers, the sweetness of something just baked. Violette Macaron translates one such moment: the delicate combination of violet and macaron, that iconic French confection with its crisp shell and yielding filling. The 2016 release carries the idea in its name and lets the composition do the rest. No hidden layers. No surprises. Just the scent of something sweet, floral, and undeniably French.
Violet is a quiet material. Soft, powdery, nostalgic, but with an edge that most people miss. Beneath that waxy, confectionery sweetness lives a tartness, almost medicinal, that shows up in real violet pastilles. In Violette Macaron, that edge is softened by almond and vanilla, which round the violet into something gentler. The macaron structure mirrors the scent: a crisp, sweet shell (top notes) giving way to a soft, warm filling (heart and base). It works because both halves are already edible.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately, sour cherry first, then rose. The cherry is bright, almost fizzy, while the rose keeps it from tipping into candy. That phase lasts maybe 15-20 minutes before the violet takes over. The heart is where the fragrance becomes itself. Violet in the air smells different from violet in a bottle, more powdery, more waxy, with a tartness that recalls pastilles. Underneath, almond and vanilla begin their slow rise. By the drydown, the almond-vanilla combination has taken the lead. The violet is still there, but it's soft now, almost an afterthought. Warm skin, close to the body, lasting for hours. The sillage never becomes loud. Moderate throughout. Present but never demanding.
Cultural impact
Violette Macaron occupies a specific corner of the gourmand-floral space. Similar in spirit to Aquolina's Pink Sugar or Guerlain's Insolence, but lighter, softer. A quieter presence in a category that often leans loud. As a 2016 release, it entered a market already populated by louder, sweeter entries and carved a more restrained niche for those seeking edible clarity without excess.
