The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Design Edition №2 arrived in 1994 carrying three names, Shining, Shocking, and Sparkling, each one a separate entry in the numbered Design Editions series from Les Beaux Arts. 9,999 pieces were available worldwide, making scarcity part of the proposition from the start. The fragrance itself leans spicy-woody, pulling a bright citrus opening into a vintage floral register built around jasmine leaf, rose, and ambergris. Mandarin orange and orange lead the way in, while sandalwood, cedar, and musk anchor the composition in something dense and grounded. It reads less like a perfume of its moment and more like a recovered artifact from a decade earlier, which is precisely what gives it a place inside the Design Editions series rather than outside it.
What gives this composition its particular gravity is the way it refuses to stay light. Mandarin orange and orange leaf do the bright opening, bright and immediate, but jasmine leaf, rose, and ambergris pull the whole thing into territory that feels narcotic and dense. The florals don't sit on the surface; they sink, weighted by the ambergris into something that reads almost edible in its creaminess. Sandalwood and cedar ground the base, while musk gives the drydown its skin-hugging friction, a warmth that stays close rather than projecting outward.
The evolution
The first hour is all friction and sparkle, with mandarin and orange leading the charge, almost candied at the edges, before jasmine leaf and rose muscle in and soften everything into a warm, slightly bruised floral haze. Around the two-hour mark, the citrus has burned off and the heart takes full command: jasmine, rose, and ambergris settling into a creamy, almost honeyed density that feels plush rather than sharp. By hour four, the cedar and sandalwood base has surfaced, musk and ambergris holding it close to the skin with that animal-warm undertone both ingredients are known for. The drydown is the best part, a warm, woody-creamy whisper that hangs on fabric and hair for the rest of the day. On skin it reads as powder, spice, and the ghost of someone's coat, the kind of trace that makes you keep lifting your wrist to your nose long after the sillage has settled.
Cultural impact
Within the niche collecting world, Design Edition №2 is known less by its scent profile than by its three-name existence, Shining, Shocking, and Sparkling, each variant treated as its own design object within the series. That structural curiosity has made it a frequent point of conversation among collectors of the Design Editions line, who reference it alongside the other numbered releases as a kind of miniature olfactory catalog.
