The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Yann Vasnier composed 308 Santolina for LabSolue as an olfactory portrait of Santolina, a wild Mediterranean shrub with silvery foliage and yellow blossoms. Vasnier built the composition around the plant itself rather than around an abstract mood. Santolina leads. Immortelle sweetens it. Pine resin warms it. The result reads less like a styled fragrance and more like a field study captured in a bottle. Vasnier approached the brief with the patience of someone who understands that a single botanical carries enough complexity to anchor a whole composition if you let it speak first. The immortelle does not compete with the Santolina; it softens the edges just enough to make the herb approachable without rounding it off into something generic.
Santolina is a distinctive material to build around. Vasnier pairs that pungency with immortelle, a flower whose own scent carries its own unmistakable character, dense and warm with a natural sweetness that feels sun-baked rather than confectionery. The combination could test the balance of any perfumer working in a minimalist register. The pine resin is what keeps it grounded, adding a dark, balsamic undertone that prevents the herbs from floating off into sharpness. What makes the composition unusual is its honesty. The composition refuses to disguise what it is.
The evolution
The opening is green and almost bitter, the Santolina reading loud and herbal in the first stretch of wear. Pine resin arrives early underneath, giving the top a slightly coniferous backbone that feels less like a decorative pine bough and more like resinous bark warmed by prolonged sun exposure. As the heart takes over, the immortelle asserts itself, and the fragrance shifts from sharp herb to something warmer and more golden. A dry, sun-warmed sweetness emerges as the two materials begin to converse, the Santolina pulling back slightly to let the flower's warmer facets come forward. The pine resin deepens through the middle phase, settling into the skin rather than projecting forward, shifting from a structural support into a quiet presence that hums beneath the other notes. By the late drydown, the composition has quieted considerably.
Cultural impact
308 Santolina stands as an example of how niche perfumery continues to push into less familiar botanical territory. Rather than reaching for the usual suspects of rose, oud, or jasmine as a centerpiece, Vasnier and LabSolue have built an entire composition around a plant that most wearers would struggle to name, let alone identify on skin. This kind of choice speaks to a broader current in contemporary fragrance culture, where audiences are growing more curious about obscure naturals and less willing to settle for compositions that taste-test the same.
