Why it exists.
The beginning
Sorrento. The name alone suggests something sun-warmed and Mediterranean, a stretch of coast where citrus has shaped daily life for generations. Villa Sorrento, released in 2021, is La Perla's olfactory postcard from that world, a citrus-forward composition that translates the brightness of bitter orange groves into something wearable. The brand's fragrance line reflects intimate-apparel roots, translating silk and pearl into scent, and this particular release carries that same private, body-aware sensibility. Perfumer Roxanne Kirkpatrick shaped the formula around the bitter orange tree, building a composition centered on bright fruit on top, delicate white flowers at the heart, and a clean skin-close base. It is summer in a bottle, but a refined, almost couture version of summer.
What makes the composition interesting isn't the citrus itself. It's what comes after. The top notes are a chorus of grapefruit, green mandarin, lemon, and blood orange, which gives the opening a complexity most single-citrus fragrances miss. The interplay of green and sweet, sharp and rounded, creates a layered entry that keeps the nose curious. Then the neroli and orange blossom arrive. These aren't decorative. They serve as the floral anchor of the entire composition, the bridge between the bright citrus opening and the softer drydown.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are a burst. Grapefruit leads, sharp and almost bitter, with the green mandarin adding a vivid sweetness underneath. Blood orange rounds out the edges, lending a softer, rounder citrus note that keeps the opening from feeling too austere. It's confident, not shy. The neroli arrives quietly, somewhere around the 20-minute mark, softening the citrus without killing it. Orange blossom joins shortly after, and the composition settles into a tender, sunlit floral phase that lasts through the next two hours. Petitgrain adds a green, slightly bitter thread that keeps the sweetness in check, lending an herbal bitterness that recalls the leaves and stems of the bitter orange tree. Together these notes create a heart that feels both bright and creamy, alive yet composed. By hour three or four, the citrus is a memory.
