The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
4 Reines was created by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni and launched in 2004, taking its name from the four rose varieties at its heart, Bulgarian, Grasse, Moroccan, and Turkish. The name calls to mind four queens, a reference to the diverse character of each rose origin. Each variety brings something distinct: the deep, honeyed warmth of Bulgarian rose; the delicate, pastel elegance of Grasse; the rich, spice-kissed quality of Moroccan rose; and the bold, damask character of Turkish rose. Together they form a rose heart with more dimension than a single-origin could achieve. The concept was elegant in its simplicity, four queens, one court, the fragrance as their meeting place.
What makes 4 Reines work is the contrast between the crisp green opening and the warm, powdery base. Bergamot and violet leaf arrive first, cutting through with a dewy freshness that feels like morning light on a garden. Then the roses bloom, not all at once, but layered, each origin asserting itself in turn. The heliotrope in the base is the unexpected element, adding a powdery, almost almond-like softness that rounds the florals into something warm and intimate. Sandalwood grounds it, musk lingers close to the skin. It's rose without cliché, structured enough to hold attention but soft enough to wear every day.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and green, bergamot's citrus brightness followed immediately by the cut-grass bite of currant leaf and the dewy lift of violet leaf. Within minutes, the roses begin their slow takeover. Bulgarian rose arrives first, its honeyed depth giving the composition weight, while the other three origins, Grasse, Moroccan, Turkish, layer in behind, each adding its own character to the chord. The transition isn't dramatic. It's a gradual softening, the green notes receding as the floral heart deepens and warms. By the second hour, the heliotrope emerges, powdery, slightly sweet, like crushed petals and warm skin. Sandalwood arrives next, its creamy woodiness anchoring the florals and extending the wear. Musk keeps things intimate, close, a signature you have to lean in to find.
Cultural impact
4 Reines occupies a quiet corner in the world of rose fragrances, discontinued now, but still sought after by those who discovered it. It's the kind of scent that inspires loyalty precisely because it doesn't announce itself. The four-queen concept, the heliotrope softness, the moderate sillage that demands intimacy rather than command, it earned its place through wearers who found something in it worth returning to.
